ShellEye on tour

18 January 2019
In August 2018 Dr Carly Daniels, Research and Development Manager at the National Lobster Hatchery (NLH) and ShellEye Demo partner, travelled to the European Aquaculture Society meeting to present on the NLH's engagement with ShellEye.
AQUA 2018 took place from August 25-29 in the beautiful French city of Montpellier and comprised a scientific conference, world press day, trade exhibition, industry forums, workshops, student events and receptions. The event highlighted the latest aquaculture research and innovation to underpin continued growth of this exciting food production sector. This 5 day conference attracted 3003 participants from 109 countries including producers, suppliers, processors, vendors, scientists, educators, students and consumers of farmed aquatic products.

This was a unique opportunity to showcase the work of ShellEye and how the project links with the potential emerging lobster aquaculture industry to experts from across the worlds aquaculture sector. Carly presented a talk entitled 'Novel Shellfish Aquaculture: Europoean Lobster – Environmental monitoring to inform rearing success'. The talk explained how understanding the marine environment and its affect on stock survival, quality and, therefore, commercial value is essential. Carly also explained how ShellEye has complemented the Innovate UK funded Lobster Grower 2 project by providing an enhanced understanding of environmental influences and their effects on lobster production. Despite being given the Graveyard Shift (last talk on the last day!) of the conference, the presentation attracted approximately 30 delegates and questions were asked relating to climate change, satellite monitoring and stock enhancement.

The partnership of two projects such as Lobster Grower and ShellEye presented a mutually beneficial opportunity to improve efficiency and further the development of the UK’s growing mariculture sector; a great showcase of the project to a global audience.
